Urbanization and industrialization are the long-term driving factors behind the rapid growth of the wire and cable industry. Alongside the rapid development of China's urban infrastructure and national economy, the wire and cable industry in China has also expanded swiftly. In 2011, the market size of wire and cable in China exceeded one trillion yuan. Currently, China has become the largest consumer market for wire and cable globally, and the wire and cable manufacturing industry has become the largest segment among more than 20 subdivisions within the electrical and electronic equipment industry in China, accounting for about one-quarter of the total.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the main business revenue of domestic wire and cable manufacturing enterprises above a certain size increased from 1.07 trillion yuan in 2011 to 1.29 trillion yuan in 2016. Subsequently, due to industrial restructuring, the overall scale of the industry declined slightly. With the development of renewable energy and other industries in China, the wire and cable industry gradually recovered. By 2022, the sales revenue of the wire and cable industry reached 1.22 trillion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.38%.

Currently, China's wire and cable industry still faces prominent structural imbalances, by characterized a large number of enterprises but low concentration. Some small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are relatively small in scale and face fierce market competition due to weak technical capabilities, limited and highly homogeneous products, resulting in varied product quality across the industry. Leading enterprises in the industry have gradually increased their R&D investment in the field of cables, further expanding product segments and business areas.

In recent years, due to the high added value of special cables and the narrowing profit margins of conventional cables, some wire and cable enterprises have begun to tap the potential of the special cable market. In December 2021, the Wire and Cable Branch of the China Electrical Equipment Industry Association released the "Guiding Opinions for the Development of China's Wire and Cable Industry During the 14th Five-Year Plan Period," which pointed out that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, strategic emerging industries' wire and cable, high-end manufacturing wire and cable, and electrical equipment wire and cable should be vigorously developed.

With the rapid development of the national economy, the demand for special cables has soared. The demand for special cables in industries such as shipping, aviation, petrochemicals, and renewable energy has increased annually, bringing enormous market opportunities and strong development momentum to the special cable industry.

In the long run, as one of the basic supporting industries in the national economy, the wire and cable industry, especially the special cable industry, still has strong development momentum. On the one hand, the continuous development of traditional sectors such as domestic power, construction, civil use, communications, shipping, military, aviation, and petrochemicals, as well as the ongoing urbanization and industrialization, will provide opportunities for the development of the wire and cable industry. On the other hand, the development of emerging fields such as renewable energy, high-end equipment manufacturing, and new infrastructure, as well as the deepening implementation of the "Belt and Road" policy, will bring new development momentum to the wire and cable industry.
